Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Empathy In Tech?

Empathy In Tech is an inclusive community for people who care about both empathy and technology to collaborate, learn, and share. Your role doesn't matter. The number of years of experience you have doesn't matter. Whether you code or not doesn't matter. You don't have to already be an expert in empathy. We're all here to learn and grow from each other. Our goal is to create an accessible opportunity for people to dissolve the “hard” and “soft” skill divide that’s defined the tech industry for far too long.

What can I do in the empathy in tech community?

As of today, here are the ways you can join up with other practitioners who are interested in empathy and tech. By participating you are agreeing to follow our Code of Conduct.

  • Join us on Discord — Here's where we share articles, ask questions, and chat with each other throughout the day. If you're not familiar with Discord, it's a large group chat, similar to Slack.

  • Sign Up for Email Updates — When we have new events, we'll announce them to the people who subscribe to our email list

  • Attend our Events — We've set up two different types of events. Interactive workshops are more structured and are presented by an industry expert. Community conversations are more casual discussions, similar to a virtual meetup. We're aiming for an every-other-week cadence and may add more in the future. If you're interested in presenting, contact us through the website.

  • Visit our LinkedIn Page — This is relatively new and getting up and running. It might be quiet when you join, but we hope you can add your voice.

  • Subscribe to our newsletter — Andrea posts long-form articles about the research she’s doing about once a month over on LinkedIn. There are over 30,000 subscribers, so you’ll be in good company.

We have plans on launching a podcast, a conference, and other activities that our members might find valuable. Every few months, we’ll host an event to get your feedback and share ideas on how we can create a community that best serves your needs. If you have any questions in the meantime, contact us.

Who are the people that make empathy in tech possible?

There are several people behind the scenes making this community what it is. Here are the main people you’re likely to interact with:

  • Andrea Goulet — The voice behind most of the content is Andrea. She founded Empathy In Tech as part of writing Empathy-Driven Software Development. She's also the founder of the community Legacy Code Rocks and the co-founder of two businesses, Corgibytes and Heartware.

  • Casey Watts — You'll see Casey moderating events and hanging out on our Discord channel. He's the owner of Happy and Effective and the author of Debugging Your Brain.

  • Katie Werremeyer — She's the person who keeps us all sane by staying on top of the community's operations. You'll see her pop on during events and may get an email from her if it's administrative in nature. She also co-founded Heartware with Andrea.

  • Nyota Gordon — When you attend an event, you’ll likely be welcomed by Nyota’s smiling face and bubbly personality. She’s the owner of the consultancy Transition365.

How Is Empathy In Tech Financially Supported?

Heartware, LLC, (the consultancy owned by Andrea and Katie) acts as a fiscal agent for the Empathy in Tech community and subsidizes the costs of running the website, hosting the events, and more. Any donations or revenue generated from the sales of Empathy in Tech products are used exclusively for Empathy in Tech operations. We are considering making Empathy in Tech a separate non-profit organization as the community matures and we have more administrative support.
